MindManager Apps F.A.Q.
Below you will find answers to frequently asked questions regarding MindManager Apps.
If you have a question that is not covered below please contact us through the Support Page and we will answer it as soon as we can.
What is the difference between "App Studio" and "MindManager Apps?"
App Studio and MindManager Apps are functionally identical, and are in fact the same Add-in.
App Studio is the product name for the Add-in available for MindManager 21, 22 and 23. App Studio for these versions of MindManager can only be added with an MSI file that installs a Windows App, also visible in the Windows control panel.
From MindManager 24, App Studio is integrated into the MindManager installer. The tabs, buttons and dialogues that are seen by all users (App users and developers) all refer to MindManager Apps. The App Studio name is used only in the context of App development.
If an App developer licence key is entered into MindManager 24, the App Studio tab is displayed, and all the developer documentation refers to App Studio.
Are Apps available for MindManager for Mac or MindManager for Web?
No. MindManager Apps is a feature for the desktop version of MindManager for Windows only.
There are no plans to implement Apps on other platforms.
How do I verify MindManager Apps installation?
The MindManager Apps feature has the following footprint.
- An Add-in called “MindManager Apps” or “App Studio” at File > Options > Add-Ins
- A button called “Apps Help” at File > Help
- A button called MindManager Apps in the Advanced tab, before the Macros button
If any Apps are already added, you may also find further buttons in the Help tab giving access to information about installed Apps. However, some Apps may not add a button there.
MindManager Apps should be present in MindManager 24 by default. For it to appear in an earlier version, the standalone App Studio installer must be successfully installed (requires elevated privileges in Windows).
If the user has entered an App Studio developer licence key, there will also be a tab called App Studio, before the Review tab. This contains functions for creating MindManager Apps.
I have purchased a licence for MindManager Apps/App Studio. How do I enter my licence key in MindManager 2024?
You will need to download and open one of the Apps from the App Library and open it in MindManager 2024.
When you do this, the menu option to enter a licence key will then appear in the MindManager Apps menu located on the Advanced Ribbon menu in MindManager 2024.
I have upgraded to MindManager 24. Where can I get the installer for App Studio?
You do not need to install App Studio if you have MindManager 24. App Studio is already integrated.
I have upgraded to MindManager 24. I previously had an App Studio developer licence key, but now there is no button for entering my App Studio licence key again
The button for entering the developer licence key is hidden in MindManager 24 by default.
There are a couple of solutions:
- Add or update any of the Harport Consulting Apps hosted at https://www.mindmanager.com/apps. These will enable the button for entering the developer licence key at Advanced > MindManager Apps.
- If you have already created a personal App, copy the attached file AppsMenu_Enable.txt into the App folder and restart MindManager. For example, if your App is called “Acropolis”, then there will be a folder in the Apps Folders location also called “Acropolis”. Copy the attached file into that folder and restart MindManager.
- If you have already created a personal App, create a new plain text file called “AppsMenu_Enable.txt” in the App folder, and add two lines to it:
AppsMenu_HasLicenceMenu = 1
AppsMenu_LicenceFile = https://www.olympic-limited.co.uk/app-studio-for-mindmanager-windows/
Then restart MindManager.
I have upgraded to MindManager 24. My previous Apps have all disappeared
This is related to the above issue.
The Apps Folder where Apps are stored may have reverted to Documents\\MindManager Apps, because your previous settings were not transferred to MindManager 24.
To fix this:
Click Advanced > MindManager Apps > Manage Apps and Options
Click the button next to the Apps Folder and browse to the previous location where you stored your Apps. By default this was Documents\\App Studio.
Are there separate run-time and developer versions of MindManager Apps?
No. The App Studio add-in supports both App runtime (where it is called “MindManager Apps”) and App development in an App Studio tab.
I have multiple versions of MindManager installed on my PC. Can I use MindManager Apps on more than one version?
Not at present. Only one version at a time is supported.
If you upgrade to MindManager 24 and have a previous version of App Studio installed for an earlier version of MindManager you should disable the App Studio add-in on the earlier version of MindManager.
Are Apps a security risk?
An App that contains content only (e.g. maps and templates) is the same level of risk as topic attachments in regular MindManager maps.
An App that contains MindManager macros or other executables could potentially contain malicious code. However, MindManager macros and attachments have been around for over 20 years, so MindManager Apps do not really change MindManager’s risk profile.
Several steps have been taken to help manage security risks:
- Apps contain MindManager macros in source code format. This means they are open to inspection and auditing. There is currently no technology for compiling MindManager macros into non-human-readable format.
- Apps can be signed by Alludo after a review process to inspect macros and other executables, looking for potential problems or privacy breaches. Once signed, the App Sharing map cannot be modified without breaking the signature. An App with an invalid signature cannot be added to MindManager.
- An organisation may choose to review and re-sign Apps before allowing their users to install them. Please request more information.
- Unsigned Apps cannot be installed by default. The user must take additional configuration steps to install an unsigned App. These additional steps can be blocked in the registry by an administrator, meaning that users cannot install unsigned Apps if that is the policy of their organisation.
- If an App contains other executables, the local malware protection mechanisms on the user’s PC should help to flag up potential problems.
- MindManager macros can be disabled by an administrator. Apps that do not contain macros can still be used, but if an App contains macros, they will be ignored.
- Attachments can also be disabled in MindManager by an administrator. This will effectively block the use of Apps, as App Sharing maps use attachments.
How can I disable the MindManager Apps feature altogether?
You can disable the MindManager Apps Add-in at File > Options > Add-Ins.
No Apps will be loaded or run with this Add-in disabled.
For enterprise installations, there is also a command line flag that will suppress the MindManager Apps feature when MindManager is installed. Please request more details.
How can I limit what our MindManager users are permitted to do?
A custom MindManager installation process can include the configuration of registry keys that control the behaviour of the MindManager Apps feature. This allows menu items and features in the options to be hidden or disabled. For example, you can configure the registry keys on a user’s system to prevent Apps from being added or updated.
Please request the document “MindManager Apps administrative registry keys” for more details.
Can MindManager Apps in MindManager 24 be updated in the field?
Yes, this can be done in an emergency situation if there is a defect in version 2.19 that needs to be fixed in the field.
- Close MindManager 24.
- In the MindManager 24 installation folder (typically C:\\Program Files\\MindManager 24), rename the file “AppStudio.dll” to “Was AppStudio.dll”. Elevated privileges will be required.
- In the MindManager 24 installation folder, rename the subfolder “App Studio” to “Was App Studio”.
- Install a replacement version of App Studio supplied with a MSI package. MindManager 24 should now pick up the newly installed version.
- If MindManager 24 is uninstalled, it will leave behind the renamed file and subfolder.
To reverse this, return the subfolder and dll file names to their previous names.
I upgraded to MindManager 24. Now when I launch the previous version (23, 22, 21) I get a blue screen message about "Version for MindManager 24 installed on 23 (22, 21)
This is probably because there is a previous version of App Studio add-in already installed on an older version of MindManager.
MindManager Apps can be used on only one version of MindManager at a time.
Quick solution:
- Disable App Studio at File > Options > Add-Ins in the previous version of MindManager.
Longer solution:
- Uninstall “App Studio” from the Windows control panel.
- Repair the MindManager 24 installation to re-register App Studio with MindManager 24. Uninstalling the previous version also removes the registration made by MindManager 24.
- Restart MindManager 24.
I upgraded to MindManager 24. The "App Studio" tab, my App Studio licence key, and other settings have all disappeared
From MindManager 23 onwards, the MindManager installer no longer copies user settings to the new version of MindManager.
This will affect other add-ins too, such as the configuration of the SharePoint add-in.
The App Studio licence key and other options are stored in these user settings, and don’t get migrated to MindManager 24 by default. So MindManager no longer displays the App Studio developer tab.
Solutions:
- You can manually re-define your settings. Or,
- If this affects multiple users, or if you have a large amount of setting data for a MindManager App, please contact Harport Consulting as there are technical methods for transferring this data to MindManager 24. Or,
- If you are comfortable with it, you can manually locate and edit the user.config XML files which contain settings data for Add-Ins. The location of these files depends on the exact MindManager version but will be similar to:
C:\\Users\\username\\AppData\\Local\\MindManager\\DefaultDomain_Path_uw0vge0b0idoxty2xk0olbfxojm1jdnr\\24.0.169\\user.config
I upgraded to MindManager 24 and uninstalled the previous App Studio add-in from the Windows control panel. Now there are no MindManager Apps in MindManager 24.
Uninstalling the separate App Studio add-in also de-registers the copy in MindManager 24.
The solution is to run a repair on the MindManager 24 installation.
